Club Med Celebrates 50 Years of Kids Club: A winning concept backed by a string of awards

50years-of-Kids-Club.jpg

Club Med is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic Kids Club. That’s 50 years of offering children of all ages, holidays that allow them to explore and be creative in a fun, safe, informal atmosphere.

In that 50 years, Club Med Kids Clubs have set the standard for what a relaxing, inclusive family holiday should be. It’s not just about keeping the children amused so the adults can relax, Club Med Kids Clubs focus on fun, discovery and creativity so children also have a holiday to remember.

It is a winning formula. Club Med Resorts around the world were consistently voted in the top 10 family resorts by voters of the Readers’ Choice Awards 2017 held by Holidays With Kids, specialists in family travel.

One of the main reasons Club Med rates so highly with families is the wide variety of activities for children and the adaptation of activities for each age bracket – from 4 months to 17 years - so every member of the family is able to relax and enjoy a holiday while discovering new things about themselves, as well as the country they’re visiting.

Club Med 50 years of Kids Club all inclusive holidays

Each child can learn new skills, uncover talents they did not know they had and share experiences with new friends as well as family. Children as young as 3 years old are encouraged to participate in activities such as golf and tennis, overcome fear with the flying trapeze or circus activities, and gain confidence in performing on stage for resort guests including professional (but fun!) rehearsal, lights,  costumes and make up.

Behind all the amazing services and activities at Kids Club are the highly trained and passionate G.Os (Gentil Organisateurs) who staff the resorts, and are why visitors return year after year.

“One of the most rewarding things is having families extend their stay because of the Kids Clubs – we have had three this season!” says Tamarra van der Zweep, an Australian Petit Club Manager at Club Med Phuket. Tamara has an Advanced Diploma in Child Care and Community Services, as well as over 11 years’ experience in child care.

Kids Club G.Os are focused on ensuring each child feels unique yet included and comfortable with a range of activities suitable for all personalities, big and small. Kids Club also provides a chance to meet kids from other countries, learn their language and culture with help from the G.Os, many of which speak multiple languages, including English.

Club Med 50 years of Kids Club all inclusive holidays

Dario Latuary, Mini Club Manager at Club Med Bintan Island, says one of the reasons children love Kids Clubs is because each carer takes time to bond with the children when they arrive at the club. “That’s why there’s many repeat visitors and why they remember us, even when they grow up."

Being a Mini Club G.O and working with the kids is the most important job. And it’s not just a job it’s your life. My personal motto is: Live the life you love, and love the life you live. In this case, it’s my job.

As well as the different Kids’ Clubs, many Club Med resorts feature a kids’ only pool, and Mini Club kids also have the opportunity to eat early meals in a special section of the restaurant in most resorts.

Club Med resorts also offer babysitting services and evening Pyjama Club for children aged 2 to 10 years.

The different Club Med Kids Clubs are:

▪️ Baby Club Med: For children aged from 4 to 23 months. Baby Club Med focuses on senses and feelings, with engaging play areas and a staff ratio that ensures each baby receives special attention.

▪️ Petite Club Med: For children aged 2 to 3 years. Petite Club Med focuses on discovery and socialising with activities such as face painting, pyjama parties, and puppet shows.

▪️ Mini Club Med: For children aged 4 to 10. Mini Club Med focuses on energy and fun activities such as Club Med’s famous Circus School programme, arts and crafts and sports.

▪️ Club Med Passworld and Junior's Club Med: For older kids, aged 11 to 17. Club Med Passworld and Junior's Club Med are dedicated teen spaces offering everything from creative activities to movie and disco nights, as well as sports and technical arts.

Interview: Justine Cullen, Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Australia, shares her Maldives holiday tips

Blog-post-Justine-header.jpg

Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Australia, Justine Cullen (@justine_cullen) recently discovered Club Med Kani with her family. We asked her some questions about her favourite moments and her top tips for a trip to the Maldives.

Note: All images below are courtesy of Justine Cullen, and have been shared with permission.

Why did you choose Club Med Kani for your holiday?

We had wanted to go the Maldives for ages and when we saw how much fun the island looked and heard how great the set up was for kids of all ages, it was hard to resist the call. My husband and I both work really hard and wanted a holiday that involved no thinking and lots of solid family time - we couldn't have picked a better place.

17817649_205708953253850_2441586709029191680_n.jpg

What was your typical day in Club Med Kani?

💤 Roll out of bed to breakfast - eat way too much food (can we talk about that chocolate bread?)

🌊 Swim in the lagoon - it was so quiet on that side it almost felt like our own private beach

👌 Do some yoga - or go for a walk.

🍴 Lunch time - Before you know it, it's lunch. Eat way too much food again.

🐠 Activities - we all went parasailing and snorkelling and the boys did the FlyJet, which they absolutely loved, and the Kids Club always had something fun organised where everyone could get involved.

🍝 Dinner - and I don't know how or why but we always had room for more...

What is your top tip for enjoying a romantic getaway while the kids are in tow?

Pop the kids into Kids Club in the late afternoon so you get in some alone time for a glass or two of rosé before dinner. It's a beautiful time of day on the island and if you find the right spot it almost feels like you have the whole place to yourselves.

What did your kids love most about their time in the Maldives?

It really is a place where you can completely relax and give your family your undivided attention, so I think they appreciated having unstressed parents who weren't running around like maniacs the way we do at home. To not even have to think about what to do for dinner was a dream. The older boys also loved having 'boys nights' with my husband - after I went to bed after dinner each night, they would go to the bar and drink mocktails and talk guy stuff. They felt so grown up and it was amazing bonding time the like of which you could never have at home. Although if you ask my youngest I'm pretty sure he would say the part he loved most was the dessert bar. (That might have been my favourite spot too.)

Anything else you’d like to add?

I wasn't sure what to expect from Club Med - if it would feel like a total party atmosphere or be too crowded and hard to relax. I was so pleasantly surprised. The resort was beautifully maintained and had the most engaging and lovely staff. Kani has struck an amazing balance between always having something happening alongside lots of spots that are peaceful and purely relaxing - and I've never seen water such a perfect shade of blue. All five of us felt that it was the perfect family holiday.

All You Need to Know About Holidays in Cancun

DSC6480-cop12y1.jpg

With its picture-perfect white-sand beaches, vibrant dining and nightlife scene, and proximity to fascinating cultural sites, Cancun is a delightful Mexican holiday destination.  Perhaps best-known for hosting spring break festivities, Cancun has much more to offer if you scratch the surface. Here's everything you need to know to plan your Cancun holiday…

Best time to go to Cancun

December-April are the peak months with clear skies and balmy temperatures, while May-August offers hotter temperatures and fewer crowds. If you're not a hard-partying student, it's best to avoid mid-March to early April – that's when spring break is in full swing.

How to get to Cancun

Cancun is around 20 hours flight time from Sydney. You can fly from all major airports in Australia to Los Angeles flying Virgin Australia, with connections to Cancun flying with either Virgin America or Delta Airlines.

Visas and Vaccinations

Australians don't require a visa for holidays to Cancun. However, if you are traveling via USA, you will need an ESTA visa. And while it's not required, it's recommended you check up on your shots: Tetanus and Diphtheria, Hepatitis A and B. It’s important to note that some Club Med Kids Clubs will ask for proof of immunisation for the little ones!

Your guide on what to do and see in Cancun

Explore ancient Mayan sites

  • A day-trip to Chichen Itza is a must-do when you visit Cancun. Amid the pyramids, arcades and columns of the ancient city, Chichen Itza's most notable landmark is El Castilo, a beautiful and imposing 355-step pyramid.

  • Tulum is another popular excursion from Cancun, with a spectacular location overlooking the Carribean Sea. The ancient walled city offers Mayan ruins set above a gorgeous beach.

  • El Ray is home to ancient stone structures and a population of friendly iguanas.

  • Coba is the only site where you can actually still climb the ruins and explore the area on a pushbike.

Discover the exotic Mexican wildlife

  • ☼ A half hour boat ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a tropical island offering a low-key alternative to the mainland. The Isla Mujeres Turtle Farm, charged with repopulating the waters with turtle hatchlings, is a must-visit.

  • Holbox is a sleepy island north of Cancun home to a large population of whale sharks. Swimming with these gentle giants of the ocean is possible from June to August.

  • ☼ The Island of Contoy is a nature reserve home to coral reefs and amazing birdlife. The waters surrounding the island contain whale sharks, tropical fish and manta rays.

  • ☼ For a truly spectacular experience, swim in the natural holes and mysterious rivers of Cenotes.

CANC_K117_292.jpg

Have fun with various sports and activities

  • ✔️ With all that turquoise water, it's no surprise watersports are one of the main drawcards in Cancun. Think about choosing an all inclusive resort: Sailing, scuba-diving, and snorkeling are all available with Club Med, for example.

CANC_G114_034.jpg
  • ✔️ With their spectacular backdrops, the golf courses of Cancun lure players from all over the world. With courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, the challenging layouts are sure to delight.

A few tips in "Survival Spanish"

  • Good morning: Buenos días

  • Good afternoon: Buenas tardes

  • Good evening: Buenas noches

  • How are you? ¿Cómo estás?

  • I’m from Australia: Soy de Australia

  • Please: Por favor

  • Thank you: Gracias

A few more helpful tips

  • ✔️ Beware when walking through Cancun's narrow streets! Cars and motorcyles often pass very close to pedestrians.

  • ✔️ Tipping is customary in Cancun: 10-15% at restaurants and one or two dollars per suitcase carried. However, if you’re at Club Med don’t sweat it – everything is included!

The beauty of Cancun represents a once in a lifetime holiday destination. Whether for a honeymoon, a family holiday or an indulgent solo getaway, Cancun is Mexico's ultimate playground.

#HowTo... Make The Most of a Bali Holiday With Kids

BlogHeroPicture360.jpg

Bustling streets, beautiful beaches and wonderful Indonesian culture… who wouldn’t want to visit Bali? With direct flights from Sydney and a travel time of less than 7 hours, it’s a great place to take your family. Here, we line up our top tips for taking the kids on a Balinese adventure…

Basic tips for going to Bali with kids

_DSC0353.jpg

✔️ Stay at a resort out of the hustle and bustle of Kuta. The busy streets will only make travelling with the kids more difficult.

✔️ Check if your accommodation in Bali offers child-minding services or a Kids Club. Ensure the staff are qualified in childcare services, especially for babies, and also check the children-to-staff ratio.

✔️ Choose a resort with an adults-only pool! Sometimes on holidays you’ve got to take some time for yourself.

✔️ Get the family up-to-date with their vaccines. In Bali it’s recommended you have a Tetanus and Diphtheria shot, as well as Hepatitis A. Some Kids Clubs will ask for your child’s vaccinations records (including Club Med), so make sure to bring them with you.

✔️ Book your transfers before you arrive! Take the worry out of finding a taxi and cramming the whole family inside, and organise a bus to take you to the resort or hotel.

Best spots for families in Bali

So you want to see the sights, but you’ve got the kids in tow. Take a look at these family friendly activities that everyone will love!

BALC_F115_145.jpg

✔️ Temple of Tanah Lot: Take the family on an adventure to a traditional Indonesian temple, filled with cultural significance.

✔️ Kintamani: What could be cooler than visiting a volcano? At 1500m, The Kintamani area is a beautiful place to appreciate Bali’s natural beauty. Meet the residents and experience local traditions first hand.

✔️ White Water Rafting: Maybe one for the older kids! Take a thrilling plunge in a raft down the Ayung River and through the Indonesian jungle.

✔️ Ubud Monkey Forest: Get up close and personal with the macaques in the mountains.

✔️ Waterbom: This Kuta waterpark is popular with the kids, whether they’re young or teens. With loads of waterslides and rides for all ages, it’s a great place for fun in the sun.

Tips for families travelling with younger children

✔️ When choosing a resort with child-minding facilities, be sure to pick one with a small staff-to-children ratio to ensure the little ones will be properly taken care of.

✔️ Find out what activities are on offer ahead of time! Resorts like Club Med will have an app or web pages dedicated to information on what is available for the kids.

✔️ No doubt you’ll be spending in the water, so bring the floaties and Aqua Nappies for the younger kids.

✔️ Even if your toddler can walk, bring a stroller for the busy streets of Kuta. With uneven footpaths and crazy motorcyclists, it’ll be much easier to push them around.

What about the big kids?

BALC_F115_115.jpg

✔️ Choose a resort with a dedicated teens club to allow your older kids to socialise and meet others.

✔️ Consider booking a second adjoining room to give your teens space on holiday. After all, you might need it too!

Plus, some general tips for travelling to Bali…

Club Med Bali Beach Buddah

✔️ The Balinese are accustomed to Aussies, but don’t get too comfortable! Don’t be afraid to haggle at markets.

✔️ Make sure you lather up the kids (and yourself) in sunscreen to protect yourself against harsh UV rays. Don’t be fooled: in tropical climates, you can still get sunburn.

✔️ Don’t feed the monkeys. They might look friendly, but they can bite.

✔️ Not everyone gets ‘Bali Belly’! Try and drink from sealed bottled water to keep the family free of sickness. Also, you can trust resorts like Club Med Bali to provide you with fresh gourmet dining.

Best Places To Go For Easter Holidays

BlogHeroPicture6.jpg

Easter can be the perfect time to travel, both to get away from crowds and also get that last hit of sunshine before winter comes. As the weather warms up, it’s not just summer that has us all dreaming of holidays overseas. The Christmas break can be extremely busy for international travel, with thousands of holidaymakers trying to make the most of the holiday season. If you'd rather skip the crowds and rather plan ahead for your Easter holiday break, we’ve got some spots that are perfect for April!

Spring skiing in Europe

Club Med Val Thorens

You’d be amazed at the quality of snow on offer on the European peaks over Easter! April is considered low season, so you’ll avoid the queues and have the pistes all to yourself. At Val Thorens, Europe’s highest ski resort, it still snows well into Easter week, and the ski season often lasts until May.

Alternatively, other ski fields that are perfect over Easter include Les Deux Alpes and Tignes Val Claret, where glaciers keep temperatures relatively low up in the mountain.

Temperatures are warmer in spring, so resist the urge to pack your earmuffs! With days sitting at above 10 degrees Celsius, you might even find it a bit warm on the mountain – especially if you’re working up a sweat. Don’t forget to bring your swimmers too: resorts like Club Med Peisey-Vallandry have outdoor heated pools that are perfect to soak up the spring sun.

Travel Tip: If you’re travelling to Europe to ski, make sure to make the most of it and transit through Paris or Rome. Flowers bloom across the gardens in Paris in springtime, while the masses gather in St Peter’s Square for Easter in Rome.

Head to Malaysia for Easter sunshine

Looking to get that last burst of sunshine before the winter? Malaysia is a great holiday destination – plus, it’s just an 8 hour flight away. Experience a cultural immersion in Kuala Lumpur with Malay, Chinese and Indian influences creating a bustling, vibrant city.

Club Med Cherating

For a break from the densely packed cities, don’t miss Cherating Beach’s secluded shores, surrounded by lush Malaysian jungle. April falls between monsoon seasons, so you’re sure to have clear skies and warm waters. If you’re an avid surfer, you’ll find great waves over the Easter period as well.

Travel Tip: One of the best way to make the most of the jungle experience in Cherating Beach over Easter break is to spend a few days at Club Med Cherating and embark with your kids and the specialized staff in a treasure hunt in the surroundings of the resort...

Discover ancient Mayan relics and sunshine in Mexico

Club Med Cancun

Home to pristine beaches and one of the world’s seven wonders, Cancun is an ideal holiday destination for Easter. It’s always sunny, and you’ll be able to visit the Mayan ruins of the Chichen Itza, as well as snorkel in beautiful clear oceans.

While April is the time for Spring Break, the Yucatan Peninsula (where Club Med Cancun is located) is secluded, so you can enjoy your beach in peace!  What’s more, some of Mexico’s best snorkelling lies in the warm waters just beyond the shores…

Discover paradise on Earth in the Maldives

Club Med Finolhu Maldives

Let’s be honest: when isn’t it a good time to visit the Maldives? With unmistakable turquoise waters and magnificent white sands, it’s the ideal holiday destination. In April you can expect perfect bluebird days, where the warm waters see vibrant sea life to flock to the coral reefs. Easter is considered the best time for scuba diving, so take a dip with the reef sharks and manta rays!

A short and sweet escape to Singapore

Singapore is less than eight hours direct flight from Sydney, so it’s perfect for a short Easter break! In April you’ll avoid the monsoons and it’s (a little bit) less humid, making it the perfect conditions to spend a few days exploring Singapore. Enjoy a meal on the Marina Bay, watch the Singapore Open Badminton tournament, spend a day at Universal Studios, or head to the Singapore Zoo…kids and adults alike will love it!

Club Med Bintan Island

Travel Tip: When you’re ready to hit the beach, skip Sentosa and take a short ferry to Bintan Island. Lie under the tropical sun by the warm waters of the South China Sea and relax…snorkel, swim, kayak, or practice your swing at the infamous Ria Bintan Golf Course.

Club Med Bintan Island

Secluded beaches, raw nature and beautiful jungle… nope, you’re not dreaming. Bintan Island, just a short ferry ride from Singapore, has all of these things – and none of the crowds. Once a pirate’s island, Bintan Island is now a treasure trove of its own.

Best time to go to Bintan Island

For the best weather, venture to Bintan Island in the dry season from March – October.  We recommend sticking around for the Tanjung Pinang International Dragon Boat Festival in October!

How to get there

Club Med Bintan Island

The easiest way to reach Bintan is via Singapore, which is only 8 hours from Sydney and 5 hours from Perth. Look for all-inclusive flights with Singapore Airlines and Qantas, or low-cost flights with Jetstar and Scoot. Once you’re in Singapore, Bintan Island is a short 50-minute ferry ride away. Too easy.

Visa and Vaccinations

Bintan Island is part of Indonesia, which means Aussie tourists won’t require a visa to visit Indonesia for less than 30 days.

Also, while it’s not a necessity, it’s a good idea to check up on your shots: Tetnus and Diptheria, Hepatitis A and B. At Club Med, Kids Clubs also require proof of immunisation for the little ones so make sure to get a certificate before heading off.

Creating family holiday memories

Mouths of Mums

Nikki Hills, publisher of the popular Mouths of Mums parenting site, recounts her memorable family holiday at Club Med Bali with her husband and three children, Toby (14), Emma (11), and Abby (9):

From theme nights, to excursions and activities, there’s always so much on offer at Club Med. We ate breakfast together every morning and then the children were off to Kids Club, ready for a soccer tournament, golf lessons, tennis or ‘dance spectacular’ rehearsals. Toby loved Juniors Club Med, which is a ‘hang out’ area for teenagers, with lounges, pool tables and X-Box machines, right by the pool and bar so they could order as many soft drinks as they like!

Club Med Bali

My husband and I spent blissful mornings running along Nusa Dua, or relaxing by the Zen pool. Mid-morning, we would grab a barista-made coffee and sit by the huge trapeze to watch the girls show off their new tricks. The G.Os are so engaged with the children and we felt safe knowing they had the wellbeing of our family at heart. Toby was free to hang out with his new mates, and we knew he was safe in the Resort. Club Med is like a break from life! No one has to worry about what’s for dinner or how much things cost. I don’t think my kids have ever seen me so relaxed. It was a week of total freedom – mind, body and spirit.
