5 surprising ways your kids grow from overseas travel

Travelling is so enriching for kids. Apart from being a break from the digital world, young ones can discover the world with new eyes and learn the ways of the world. Discover below 5 reasons why you should definitively take your kids on an international adventure and let them learn about the rich experience of travel.

#1 - Appreciating new cultures

Appreciating new cultures starts with the discovery of new surroundings, new food, new climate,… This total new environment is the perfect opportunity to appreciate what the words has to offer out there.

At Club Med, our G.Os, G.Es and GM’s embrace the word “multicultural”. More than 100 different nationalities are represented within the 75 villages of Club Med worldwide. With a culture of open-mindedness and tolerance, Club Med creates an environment that facilitates interaction, learning and discoveries of other cultures.

#4 - Learning about nature and the environment

Learning outside from textbooks, your kids can see, feel and live each experience in direct contact with nature and learn how the environment and the planet are important factors to take into account in our everyday life.

Our “Super Radish” programs and Pedagogical Garden sensitize children to healthy and responsible nutrition, teaching them about plants’ needs and how to grow fresh vegetables.

We believe in helping kids better understand and appreciate the local environment through fun and inspiring activities. They’ll never forget seeing the turtles hatch at Club Med Bintan Island, or discovering fishes’ ecosystem on the underwater trail at Club Med Kani.

#5 - It’s making them grow even better

It’s all about what they learn and new “soft skills” they experience for the first time in their lives.

The kids gain skills like being adaptable, being kind, curious, open to new things, open to multiculturalism,…

Protect wildlife with our turtle sanctuary in Indonesia and Malaysia

Playing a vital role in local fauna conservation, our Turtle Sanctuary at Club Med Bintan Island protects the beachside breeding grounds of two endangered species, the Green and Leatherback turtles. The Sanctuary also acts as a research facility, and as a sickbay for injured turtles to be nursed back to health.

Last summer alone, over 200 baby turtles have been successfully released from our turtle sanctuary at Club Med Bintan Island!

You can also take care of turtles in Malaysia in Club Med Cherating Beach with a beautiful turtle sanctuary where you can release the turtles on the beach and learn about their very important conservation.

The Maldivian marine life is suffering from global warming and pollution. At Club Med Kani, we’ve partnered with marine biologists to create the Mobi Reef Underwater Trail, a snorkelling tour teaching Club Med guests all about underwater life and how to preserve it.

We also have an artificial reef installation, sheltering fishes and marine life in our resort’s perimeter. Furthermore, guests can sponsor replantation of coral plants with our coral propagation program.

Benefits of living more sustainably

8 million tonnes of plastic finds it way to the ocean each year and more than half comes from Asia. CRAZY right?! Although scientists, engineers and researchers are actively trialing powerful machines to cleanup the oceans, removing plastic is not 100% efficient and takes more time than to stop producing it.

Did you know?

500 million*

plastic bottles used every year

1 trillion*

plastic bags discarded every year

100,000 tones*

gums (made of synthetic rubber coming from plastic) discarded every year

3 billion tonnes**

quantity of plastic produced by Australia,

91%

of plastic is not recycled

Everyone can make an impact at their own scale, so why not starting now?

At Club Med, we believe that our daily habits can slightly be tweaked in order to make a positive impact together, here are some of our quick ways to reduce plastic waste:

  • Reusable coffee cups for a guilt-free coffee

One cup per person can reduce the production of 1 billion disposable cups (number of cups used by Australian each year according to the ABC News) - sounds pretty easy right? We also took the occasion to gift our loyal customers and top partners, a perfect way to thank them with a sustainable gift. Good tip: some coffee shops reward earth-conscious customers by offering a discount on the price of their coffee, another reason to live more sustainably!

The Club Med office proud of their re-usable coffee cups!

  • Say no to plastic cuttlery

When buying lunch, don’t take the plastic cutlery the takeaway shop gives you and use instead the cutlery you have in your office or at home.

  • Reusable water bottles, do good for you and for the planet

No need to buy new plastic bottles everyday, what if we you could save money and time just with a reusable water bottle? Plastic bottles are not only bad for the planet but they also contain chemicals called endocrine disruptors which can be also harmful for your health.

  • Buy in bulk at the supermarket (and save money!)

Bringing your own containers to buy your pasta, cereals, rice and more… will help you make great savings on your grocery budget and will also cut down considerably the packaging waste! Modern jars can be integrated in the decoration of your kitchen, organised on shelves and ready for you to use. If you are a DIY person, you can also customize them with your kids!

  • Make your beach trip count for the environment

Still not convinced that every small personal action can make a big impact on our planet? Take 3 For The Sea is proving the contrary! This Australian charity founded by surfers and marine biologists emphasizes on the impact of collective efforts on the plastic pollution reduction. Each time you go to the beach, for a morning swim or just an evening walk, grab three pieces of rubbish you find on your way and yes, you’ve already made a difference!

Pioneer in eco-construction:

We pay close attention to integrating our resorts harmoniously with their natural surroundings. In all Club Med resorts, the built-up surface only covers 7% of the total site surface. Club Med Finolhu Villas has over 6,000sqm of solar panels which provide solar energy to our resort in the Maldives.

KANC_J118_073.jpg

Preserving biodiversity:

Protecting the biodiversity of our natural surroundings is a big focus for us. In the Maldives, we’ve created artificial reefs and fish refuges – giving our fish friends new homes – and at Club Med Bintan Island, our turtle nursery helps protect endangered turtle species.

BALC_F118_009.jpg

Reducing food wastage:

On average, only 100g of food is wasted per person, per meal – about the size of a kiwi fruit! We’ve also introduced a new innovative technology, Winnow, to help reduce food wastage even further – we’ve seen a 60% reduction at Club Med Bali already!

Fun and informative activities for children:
